Daily Deviation

Given 2013-07-10
Portrait of a Leatherworker by *Indiangal In Minecraft, in order to get leather, you must kill cattle (and, yes, horses as of the update). It is no different here. Please respect the photographer and this deviation as a work of photojournalism and a striking, if controversial, view of a part of our world. ( Featured by 1pen )

Hello ^1pen

I've been away from dA for a while, and when I logged onto the site again today, I saw an amazing interest in one of my favorite pics, which is not necessarily everybody's cup of tea!!

I wondered why this sudden interest until i came across a message congratulating me on the DD.  Wow, I'm gobsmacked.  This is awesome, but it is also the least expected.  Thank you ^1pen for respecting and appreciating my work.  And I'm particularly thankful to you for helping to start the dialogue that's going on below.

Thank you to everybody for their comments - they are much appreciated.

By the way, I'm thrilled to bits to get my second DD!!

:-)

I know how this is. We used to do it ourselves.
We drove around to the cockies farms and collected all the dead cows and calves, took them home and skined them.
We how ever, didnt just leave the bodies there in the middle of the paddock, thats a little disrespectful of these people.
We used the meat for the dogs, and the bodies were dumped for the pigs to eat.

I don't get why people are offended by this. It's apart of life, animals eat other animals all the time, and we have been doing it since the being of time.

Why are people offended by this? :unimpressed: I hope you're all vegans..
I've had skinning as a job for a little while. I actually thought it was fun. But it'd get repetitive if you do it every day.

Nice photograph and congrats on the DD.

If people think its so bad looking at this, imagion how bad it would be to actully see, smell and touch day in and day out just so you can afford your next meal. Just look at his facal expression he doesn't look like he is enjoys this.

Not everyone gets the choice to live a clean and easy life, with a job they enjoy.

I can't even imagine how they could deal with all the terrible odor from the dead bodies. If I ever took a few sniffs, I would probably be gagging and then be hurling out my stomach.

Also congrats on the DD.

Damn....I lived on a ranch and have killed and butchered hundreds of pigs, goats, sheep, cows, chickens and I can go on.....But with that amount of decaying animals, the stench must be horendous and the flies and maggots everywhere. But back to the picture....it's an awsome depiction of life and death. Especially in B/W.

Well we kill chickens for KFC, steers for that steak on the table, pigs for bacon, pork, and ham, and turkeys for that Thanksgiving dinner. It's all sad. So become a vegetarian and save an animal.

I don't usually comment on DDs but this one was so strikingly different I have to.
This is a photo of life and death. It's blunt and very real. Personally, I don't find it offensive. It made me think deeply for a moment about the stark, brutal truth of life and death. To fully appreciate photos of beautiful, living creatures, we must see what they (and we) will eventually become. Dead creatures.

Congratulations on the DD!

This is an excellent quality photo.

The bunny huggers can go munch on a big mac. This here is reality. Art, like life, isn't (and shouldn't be) majestic wolves running through the meadows while the sun shines on the purple pretty periwinkles or whatever.

This is a bittersweet photojournalism piece that deserves the Daily Deviation for today. It reminds me of the quote about if people today had to kill animals for their own food, most would be vegetarians. I don't know if it would apply to most but it would certainly be accurate for myself. This is such an honest image I can't help but love it.

I think it's a very honest, very real photo and it deserves the DD it got. This is not about animal cruelty and it's not glorifying animal cruelty either. This is a photo of a man who is allowing someone to document his livelihood, and trust me, there are worse livelihoods out there.

If you hate the fact that animals are being killed, then do something about constructive about it, like becoming a vegetarian/vegan and supporting organizations like SPCA and WWF.

Otherwise, try this - FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

By the way, a DD is not a reward for how "artful" something is. It's a feature. I've seen DDs that I didn't think were art, and I've seen art that should've gotten a DD but didn't. So instead of complaining about it, why not suggest something else? Just saying.

Here is a DD that proves that "a DD is not a reward": [link]

I hate our SPCA - they're more concerned about money than animals, as are many in Canada.

Otherwise I agree - real treatment of subject of life for this man. Maybe this man hates his life for what he has to do but his family would starve otherwise? Art makes you think and feel =)
